Definition

Technical SEO

Indexing is the process by which a search engine stores and organizes the content of crawled pages in its database. A page must be crawled and then indexed to appear in search results. Indexing is separate from crawling — a page can be crawlable but not indexed if it has a noindex directive.

Why it matters

An unindexed page cannot rank. Monitoring indexation status is a fundamental technical SEO task.
